would a mere birthday wish cause such excitement in several circles Well it does not stay ‘mere’ when the people involved are Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar Even such innocuous exchange of greetings are bound to be read with deep political meanings if it involves such heavyweights Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar PTI For those not in the know Nitish Kumar turned 66 on Wednesday and the prime minister speaking to him on phone wished him long life and good health Later he mentioned it in his post on Twitter It would be a routine matter if it were not for the turbulent history of their relationship It has taken many twists and bitter turns over the last decade After his massive electoral loss in the parliamentary polls of 2004 Nitish – then the leader of the JD(U)-BJP alliance – sought to distance himself from Modi in an aggressive fashion He was convinced that any association with the then Gujarat chief minister would extract a heavy political price from him in Bihar The Gujarat riots had taken place in 2002 and Muslim voters in the state didn’t look kindly at Modi In the Assembly elections of 2005 Nitish took the firm stand that Modi won’t campaign in Bihar After he rose back to power he made it clear to the BJP that the latter was not welcome in the state He did not allow Modi to campaign in the parliamentary polls of 2009 The relation got acrimonious when he refused to accept Rs 5 crore sent by the Gujarat government for victims of Kosi floods The turbulent equations continued till the Assembly elections of 2015 through the general election of 2014 which the BJP won with thumping majority However of late the relation between both has taken a turn for the better Nitish was among the first top leaders of the country to support the demonetisation Modi has been appreciating the governance of Nitish and his positive approach to progressive policies Political observers see it as a clever ploy from both to build bridges with a political strategy in mind For Nitish it is a good way to put pressure on alliance partner Rashtriya Janata Dal which has been acting difficult For Modi and the BJP it is a question of keeping future allies ready just in case Modi’s call to Nitish on Wednesday thus assumes importance The turbulence is now a thing of the past It could be just a courtesy call today but not without its political significance New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Sunday imposed a cost of Rs 10000 on Arvind Kejriwal after he failed to file his response to a fresh Rs 10 crore defamation suit filed by Union minister Arun Jaitley over the use of an objectionable word allegedly by the chief minister’s lawyer File image of Arvind Kejriwal PTI Joint registrar Pankaj Gupta directed the chief minister to deposit the cost while granting him two more weeks to file his response The high court had on 23 May sought the response of Kejriwal on why defamation proceedings should not be initiated against him However Kejriwal’s counsel Rishikesh Kumar had sought more time to file the response which was opposed by advocate Manik Dogra counsel for the Union minister Jaitley who holds twin portfolios of finance and defence had filed the second defamation suit after Kejriwal’s lawyer Ram Jethmalani allegedly "abused" him in an open court during proceedings in another defamation suit he had filed against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and five other party functionaries During the cross-examination of the Union minister on 17 May before the joint registrar in the Delhi High Court Jethmalani had allegedly used a term Jaitley had found objectionable A day after another high court judge who was hearing a connected matter had termed as "scandalous" the remarks allegedly made by Jethmalani against Jaitley before the joint registrar Terming the word as not only "false baseless malicious and abusive but per se defamatory" Jaitley had told the court that he was "subjected to numerous questions terminologies/statements that are ex-facie abusive malicious offensive irrelevant and slanderous" Jethmalani who was expelled from the BJP for six years in 2013 had told the joint registrar that he used such words against Jaitley during the proceedings on the instructions of Kejriwal However Kejriwal’s counsel had submitted there was no such instruction The court proceedings had ended abruptly following heated exchanges between the lawyers of Jaitley and Kejriwal Jaitley had then warned Jethmalani that he would aggravate the charges against Kejriwal The AAP leaders had accused the BJP leader of corruption as the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) a post he had held from 2000 to 2013 Jaitley who had rejected all allegations levelled by the AAP leaders in December 2015 filed a civil defamation suit seeking Rs 10 crore in damages from Kejriwal and five other others claiming they made "false and defamatory" statements in the case involving DDCA thereby harming his reputation The AAP leaders had allegedly attacked Jaitley and some of his family members in various fora including social media platforms over alleged irregularities and financial bungling in the DDCA The five other AAP leaders accused in the first defamation case are Raghav Chadha Kumar Vishwas Ashutosh Sanjay Singh and Deepak Bajpai Besides the civil defamation suit Jaitley has also filed a separate criminal defamation case in the trial court against the AAP leaders By: Express Web Desk | Updated: July 7 2017 7:39 am Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered a horrific injury on Thursday at
